How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Afghan Hound Health & Weight Management

Afghan Hounds are one of the oldest sighthound breeds, originally developed in the mountains of Afghanistan to chase down gazelle and hare across rugged terrain. Their striking, flowing coat and aloof demeanor belie a powerful, athletic build designed for bursts of incredible speed. As a deep-chested breed, Afghan Hounds are susceptible to bloat (GDV) — a life-threatening emergency made more likely by excess weight. Extra pounds also accelerate hip and elbow dysplasia and put stress on their lean, coursing-frame joints.

Exercise: Afghans need 45–60 minutes of daily exercise, ideally including a long walk or jog and a safe off-leash sprint in a fenced area. Their sighthound instincts mean they will chase anything that moves — always use a secure, enclosed space for running. Mental stimulation through lure coursing satisfies their hunting drive beautifully.

Feeding tips: Feed 2–2.5 cups of large-breed dry food daily in two meals to reduce bloat risk. A lean body condition is essential for this breed — you should see a visible abdominal tuck. Avoid rich, high-fat diets and never exercise immediately before or after eating. Consider using a slow feeder bowl.

Keeping your Afghan Hound at a healthy 45–60 lbs (20–27 kg) minimizes bloat risk and preserves joint health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Afghan Hounds to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
