How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Airedale Terrier Health & Weight Management

Known as the "King of Terriers," the Airedale Terrier is the largest of the terrier family, originally bred in Yorkshire, England to hunt otters and rats along rivers. They are intelligent, versatile working dogs with a wiry, dense coat and a square, athletic build. Airedales are prone to hip dysplasia and gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), both common in larger, active breeds — extra weight compounds stress on their joints and increases bloat risk. They are also susceptible to hypothyroidism, which can cause weight gain that further exacerbates these issues.

Exercise: Airedales need 60 minutes of vigorous daily exercise — long walks, jogging, swimming, and active play sessions. They thrive with a job to do: agility, tracking, and obedience training channel their terrier energy productively. An under-exercised Airedale becomes bored, destructive, and prone to weight gain.

Feeding tips: Feed 2–2.5 cups of quality dry food split into two meals. Use a large-breed formula and avoid free-feeding. Measure portions carefully — Airedales' love of food combined with a slowing metabolism after middle age makes them easy to overfeed. Limit treats to 10% of daily calories and watch for signs of thyroid-related weight changes.

Keeping your Airedale Terrier at a healthy 50–70 lbs (23–32 kg) protects their joints and reduces bloat risk. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Airedale Terriers to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
