How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

American Foxhound Health & Weight Management

American Foxhounds were developed in colonial America for fox hunting, descending from English and French hound stock. They are lean, long-legged scent dogs with incredible endurance, built to run for miles across open terrain. Their independent, pack-oriented temperament makes them wonderful companions for active families. Hip dysplasia is a key concern — excess weight accelerates joint deterioration in these endurance athletes. Their long, floppy ears also trap moisture and debris, leading to chronic ear infections that can worsen if the dog is overweight and less able to stay active.

Exercise: Foxhounds need 60–90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise — long runs, hiking, and scent-tracking games. They have remarkable stamina and were literally bred to run all day. A fenced yard is essential; their powerful nose will override recall commands. They make excellent running and cycling partners.

Feeding tips: Feed 2.5–3 cups of active-breed formula daily in two meals. Foxhounds are known for their love of food and tendency to scavenge — secure trash cans and counter-surf-proof kitchens. Measure portions carefully rather than free-feeding. Supplement with lean protein and joint-supporting omega-3 fatty acids.

Keeping your American Foxhound at a healthy 45–65 lbs (20–30 kg) preserves their joints and ear health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for American Foxhounds to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
