How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

American Water Spaniel Health & Weight Management

The American Water Spaniel is a rare, versatile gundog developed in the Midwest for retrieving waterfowl from small boats. They are compact, muscular, and moderately built — a true all-weather sporting companion. Their curly, water-resistant coat reflects their love of aquatic work. Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are common concerns in the breed, and excess weight places direct strain on these vulnerable joints. They are also prone to progressive retinal atrophy and ear infections — moisture trapped in their floppy ears after swimming can cause chronic inflammation.

Exercise: AWS dogs need 45–60 minutes of daily exercise with plenty of opportunities to swim, retrieve, and explore. They are natural water dogs and happiest when given a job involving fetch or field work. Long walks, hiking, and bird-dog-style training sessions keep both body and mind engaged.

Feeding tips: Feed 1.5–2 cups of quality sporting-breed formula daily in two meals. Adjust portions based on activity level — a working or field dog needs significantly more than a couch companion. Dry ears thoroughly after swimming. Limit treats and avoid feeding high-fat scraps.

Keeping your American Water Spaniel at a healthy 25–40 lbs (11–18 kg) protects their joints and extends their working life.
