How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Basenji Health & Weight Management

Basenjis are ancient hunting dogs from Central Africa, known for their unique yodel-like vocalization instead of a traditional bark. They are small, elegant, short-coated sighthounds with wrinkled foreheads and tightly curled tails. Originally used to hunt small game in the Congo rainforest, they are alert, independent, and remarkably clean — often compared to cats. Hip dysplasia and Fanconi syndrome (a hereditary kidney disorder) are key health concerns. Excess weight accelerates joint deterioration and places additional strain on kidneys already vulnerable to this breed-specific condition.

Exercise: Basenjis need 45–60 minutes of daily exercise — brisk walks, lure coursing, and secure off-leash running in fenced areas. Their strong prey drive means recall is unreliable in open spaces. They excel at agility and enjoy varied, stimulating activities rather than repetitive exercise. Mental challenges are essential to prevent destructive boredom.

Feeding tips: Feed 3/4 to 1 cup of high-quality small-breed formula daily in two measured meals. Basenjis can be picky eaters, but avoid the temptation to over-feed or offer excessive treats to entice them. Monitor water intake and urination closely — early signs of Fanconi syndrome include excessive drinking and frequent urination.

Keeping your Basenji at a healthy 22–26 lbs (10–12 kg) protects their joints and kidneys. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Basenjis to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
