How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Beagle Health & Weight Management

Beagles are merry, curious scent hounds with an extraordinary nose and a compact, sturdy frame. Their legendary appetite is hardwired — bred to hunt for hours, they are programmed to eat whenever food is available. Beagles are among the most obesity-prone breeds, and excess weight is devastating for their long back and short legs, dramatically increasing intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) risk. Hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism are also concerns worsened by extra pounds.

Exercise: 30–40 minutes of daily exercise — brisk walks with plenty of sniffing time. Beagles are scent-driven, so let them "sniff-walk" — the mental stimulation burns calories too. Always use secure fencing; a Beagle following a trail will ignore recall commands. They excel at nosework and tracking activities.

Feeding tips: Beagles are professional food thieves who will countersurf, raid trash cans, and steal food from children's hands. Secure all food surfaces. Measure every meal with a kitchen scale — a "generous scoop" can add 20–30% excess calories. Use puzzle feeders to slow eating. Replace treats with green beans or small apple slices.

Keeping your Beagle at a lean 20–24 lbs (9–11 kg) is critical for spine and joint protection. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Beagles to determine exact daily needs, monitor body condition with our BCS tool, and follow the feeding guide for safe portion sizes.

Weight Management Tips for Beagle

Breed-specific guidance backed by veterinary research

Ideal Weight Range

The AKC recognizes two Beagle varieties by height: ≤13 inches: under 20 lbs (9 kg); 13–15 inches: 20–30 lbs (9–13.6 kg). Most pet Beagles are the 15-inch variety. Males typically weigh 22–30 lbs; females 20–25 lbs.

Obesity Risk

Beagles are consistently ranked among the top 5 most obesity-prone breeds (APOP). As scent hounds bred to track for miles, they have an exceptional food drive — they will eat far beyond satiation if given the opportunity. Additionally, hypothyroidism affects 5–10% of the breed, causing weight gain even with normal food intake.

Exercise Requirements

  • Adult: Minimum 60 minutes daily; ideally 90 minutes. Combine leash walks with scent work games to engage their powerful nose.
  • Senior: 30–60 minutes in split sessions. Keep activity low-impact to protect the spine.

Breed-Specific Weight Management Tips

  1. Never free-feed — Beagles will consume everything available. Use measured meals (2× daily) with a kitchen scale. See our feeding guide for breed-specific portion recommendations.
  2. Use scent-based puzzle feeders — channel their nose instinct into slow feeding; a snuffle mat can turn mealtime into a 15-minute enrichment activity.
  3. Guard against counter-surfing — Beagles are notorious food thieves. Secure countertops and use lidded trash bins; even a “small” stolen slice of bread is a significant caloric load for a 22-lb dog.
  4. Screen for hypothyroidism annually — if your Beagle gains weight despite appropriate calorie intake, request a full thyroid panel (T4, free T4, TSH). Untreated hypothyroidism makes weight loss impossible.
  5. Protect the spine — use ramps for furniture access; avoid letting your Beagle jump on/off couches. Excess weight + spinal stress = high IVDD risk.

Health Risks of Obesity

  1. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) — Beagles’ elongated body conformation puts continuous stress on the spine; obesity accelerates disc degeneration. Peak risk age: 3–7 years.
  2. Hypothyroidism exacerbation — excess body fat worsens endocrine imbalance, creating a vicious cycle of weight gain and metabolic slowdown.
  3. Diabetes mellitus — obesity is a primary risk factor; approximately 3–5% of Beagles develop diabetes, with obesity significantly increasing likelihood.

BCS Quick Check

Beagles are compact and dense — they feel heavier than they look. With flat hands, run along the ribcage: ribs should be easily felt without pressing, like running fingers over a pencil. From above, look for a defined waist behind the ribs; from the side, the abdomen should tuck up noticeably. Because Beagles are so food-motivated, re-check monthly — even 1 lb of gain on a 22-lb dog represents a meaningful shift. See our BCS chart for visual reference.

Male vs Female Beagle: Size Difference

Male and female Beagles differ noticeably in size. Males are typically heavier and taller at the shoulder.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should a Beagle weigh?

The ideal weight for a Beagle is 911 kg (19.824.3 lbs). Even a small weight gain can be significant for smaller breeds. Use our calorie calculator above to get personalized feeding recommendations.

How many calories does a Beagle need per day?

A typical adult Beagle weighing 10 kg needs approximately 630787 kcal per day, depending on activity level and whether they are neutered. Use our breed-specific calculator above for an exact number based on your dog's details.

Is my Beagle overweight?

59% of dogs are overweight, and most owners cannot tell just by looking. Check your Beagle's Body Condition Score (BCS) — if you can't easily feel their ribs or they have no visible waist from above, they may be overweight. Take our free 2-minute BCS assessment above to find out.

When does a Beagle reach full adult weight?

Beagle puppies reach 50% of their adult weight by 4–5 months and typically reach full adult weight by 9–10 months, according to AKC growth guidelines. Small breeds mature faster than large breeds.

What size crate does a Beagle need?

A Beagle typically needs a 24-inch crate based on breed size. Use PawScale's free crate size calculator for a personalized recommendation.

Why is my Beagle gaining weight even though I feed very little?

Beagles are prone to hypothyroidism (5–10% of the breed), which causes weight gain even with restricted food intake. If your Beagle is gaining despite measured meals, request a full thyroid panel (T4, free T4, TSH). Untreated hypothyroidism makes weight loss nearly impossible. Use our calorie calculator to confirm you are feeding the right amount.

How do I stop my Beagle from stealing food and counter-surfing?

Beagles are notorious food thieves with powerful noses. Secure countertops, use lidded trash bins, and never leave food unattended. A single stolen slice of bread can be 100+ kcal — significant for a 22-lb dog. Use scent-based puzzle feeders (snuffle mats) to channel their food drive into slow, enriching meals. Check our calorie calculator to account for all treats and stolen food.

How much should a 6-month-old Beagle weigh?

A 6-month-old male Beagle typically weighs 5.5–8.0 kg (12–18 lbs), while females weigh 5.0–7.0 kg (11–15 lbs). Beagles mature earlier than larger breeds — most reach adult weight by 12 months.

Are Beagles easy to overweight?

Yes. Beagles are one of the most obesity-prone breeds due to their strong food drive and compact size. Even 1 kg of extra weight represents 10% of their body mass. Monitor their BCS monthly using our free tool.

How many calories does a Beagle need per day?

An adult Beagle typically needs 400–600 calories per day. Use our Calorie Calculator for an exact RER-based figure adjusted for your dog's age, activity level, and neuter status.
