How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Belgian Malinois Health & Weight Management

Belgian Malinois are intense, driven working dogs often described as "German Shepherds on overdrive." They dominate police, military, and protection work worldwide. Their high drive means they need massive physical and mental exercise. Obesity is rare in working Malinois but can occur in pet lines without sufficient activity. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common; lean body condition is critical.

Exercise: 60–90+ minutes of structured daily exercise — running, protection sports, tracking, and agility. A Malinois without a job will create one (usually destructive). They thrive on advanced training, schutzhund, and IPO sports. Mental exercise is non-negotiable.

Feeding tips: Active Malinois need high-quality, calorie-dense food with 25%+ protein. Measure portions even for working dogs — overfeeding leads to bloat risk. Feed 2–3 meals daily. Adjust calories based on workload; reduce on rest days.

Keeping your Belgian Malinois at an ideal 40–79 lbs (18–36 kg) supports joint health and peak performance. Use PawScale’s calorie calculator for Malinois to set precise daily intake, check body condition with our BCS assessment, and plan meals with the crate size calculator.
