How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Border Terrier Health & Weight Management

Border Terriers are compact, wiry-coated working terriers with remarkable endurance for their size. Originally bred to bolt foxes from dens, they have an athletic build that should stay lean. Excess weight stresses their joints and can worsen hip dysplasia — a known breed concern. Their double coat and active metabolism mean they burn calories efficiently, but overfeeding still leads to obesity.

Exercise: 40–60 minutes of daily vigorous exercise — running, hiking, and secure off-leash exploration. Border Terriers are escape artists, so fencing must be secure. They excel at earthdog trials, agility, and flyball. A tired Border Terrier is a well-behaved Border Terrier.

Feeding tips: Borders are food-motivated but not typically obsessive beggars. Measure meals with a scale. Choose an active-breed formula with 22%+ protein. On high-activity days, slightly increase portions; on rest days, reduce accordingly.

Keeping your Border Terrier at an ideal 11–15 lbs (5–7 kg) supports working-dog conditioning. Use PawScale’s calorie calculator for Border Terriers to find precise daily needs, check body condition with our BCS tool, and follow the crate size calculator.
