How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Cairn Terrier Health & Weight Management

Cairn Terriers are scrappy, weather-resistant little dogs from the Scottish Highlands, originally bred to hunt foxes, rats, and other vermin among rocky cairns (stone piles). One of the oldest terrier breeds, they served as the inspiration for Toto in The Wizard of Oz. Compact, sturdy, and endlessly curious, they pack big-dog confidence into a small frame. Patellar luxation and hip dysplasia are the primary orthopedic concerns — excess weight directly stresses their small knees and hips. Cairns are also prone to dental disease and glaucoma, and obesity worsens systemic inflammation that can accelerate these conditions.

Exercise: Cairn Terriers need 30–45 minutes of daily exercise — brisk walks, play sessions, and supervised off-leash exploration in a secure area. Their strong terrier instinct means they will dig, chase, and investigate everything. They enjoy earth dog trials, agility at a small scale, and scent games. Keep them mentally engaged to prevent digging up the yard.

Feeding tips: Feed 1/2 to 3/4 cup of quality small-breed formula daily in two measured meals. Cairns are food-motivated and will happily overeat if given the chance. Measure every portion and limit treats to 10% of daily calories. Avoid free-feeding. Brush teeth regularly — small breeds are especially prone to periodontal disease.

Keeping your Cairn Terrier at a healthy 13–18 lbs (6–8 kg) protects their joints and teeth. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Cairn Terriers to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
