Clumber Spaniel Weight & Calorie Guide

The Clumber Spaniel is the largest and heaviest of the spaniel family, originally bred in England to hunt game through dense undergrowth. Stocky and low-slung at 55–80 lbs, their long back and heavy bone create significant vulnerability to hip dysplasia and intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). Excess weight is devastating for this breed — it accelerates joint breakdown, increases spinal disc pressure, and raises bloat risk in their deep chest. Clumbers are also food-obsessed and will eat anything they find, making weight management a constant daily battle.

Exercise: Clumbers need 45–60 minutes of moderate daily exercise — steady walks, sniffing outings, and gentle retrieving. They are not built for speed or jumping. Feeding tips: Strict portion control is non-negotiable. Measure every meal with a kitchen scale and feed two meals daily to reduce bloat risk. Use a slow feeder and avoid elevated bowls.
