How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Cocker Spaniel Health & Weight Management

Cocker Spaniels are prone to obesity, and excess weight has outsized impact on this breed. They are susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and ear infections — extra pounds worsen joint stress while the additional body fat can impair immune function and make ear infections harder to resolve.

Exercise: 30–60 minutes of daily exercise — Cocker Spaniels are sporting dogs at heart and enjoy walks, field work, and retrieving games. They have excellent stamina for their size. Regular exercise also helps prevent the boredom-related behaviors (excessive barking, chewing) that under-exercised Cockers develop.

Feeding tips: Measure food with a scale. Cocker Spaniels are enthusiastic eaters with a strong tendency to overeat. Limit treats and avoid feeding from the table. Choose a formula designed for active sporting breeds with moderate fat content (15–18%). Split into 2 meals daily.

Keeping your Cocker Spaniel at a healthy 20–31 lbs (9–14 kg) supports joint health and ear health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Cocker Spaniels to set daily limits, check body condition with our BCS tool, and follow the feeding guide for tailored meal plans.
