How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Dalmatian Health & Weight Management

Dalmatians are lean, athletic dogs built for endurance. Their most unique health concern is uric acid stone formation — a genetic trait that requires specific dietary management. Excess weight adds stress to the urinary system and joints, and obese Dalmatians face compounded health risks.

Exercise: Dalmatians need 60–90 minutes of active exercise daily — running alongside a bicycle, long hikes, or extended fetch sessions. They were carriage dogs and have remarkable stamina. A simple walk is insufficient for this breed.

Feeding tips: Feed a moderate-protein diet (avoid very high-purine foods like organ meats, sardines, and spinach) to reduce uric acid stone risk. Ensure constant access to fresh water — hydration is critical. Split meals into 2 portions daily. Avoid calcium supplements unless vet-recommended.

Keeping your Dalmatian at an ideal 44–71 lbs (20–32 kg) supports urinary and joint health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Dalmatians to determine exact energy needs, assess body condition with our BCS tool, and follow the feeding guide for portion guidance.
