How the puppy weight predictor works
This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.
Factors that affect adult weight
Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Field Spaniel Health & Weight Management
The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized spaniel originally bred for flushing and retrieving game in dense English hedgerows. Slightly longer than tall at 35–55 lbs, they are the most substantial of the flushing spaniels with a moderate-length silky coat. Fields are prone to hip dysplasia, ear infections from their long pendant ears, and hypothyroidism, which can cause unexplained weight gain. Excess weight worsens all joint-related issues and compounds the risk of spinal problems in this slightly elongated body. Despite their calm demeanor, they need daily exercise to stay balanced.
Exercise: Field Spaniels need 45–60 minutes of daily exercise — brisk walks, hiking, retrieving, and swimming. They are steady, methodical workers who enjoy varied terrain. A Field without adequate exercise becomes mouthy and restless. They excel in hunt tests, tracking, and agility at a moderate level. Mental stimulation through scent work keeps them content.
Feeding tips: Feed two measured meals daily using a medium-breed or active-dog formula. Fields are food-motivated and prone to scavenging. Measure every meal with a cup or scale. Clean ears after meals and outdoor activities to prevent infection. If weight increases without food changes, ask your vet to check thyroid levels. Limit treats to 10% of daily calories.
Keeping your Field Spaniel at a healthy 35–55 lbs (16–25 kg) supports joints and overall health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Field Spaniels to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
