How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Irish Wolfhound Health & Weight Management

The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all dog breeds — a majestic giant originally bred to hunt wolves and elk across the Irish countryside. Despite their imposing size, they are gentle, dignified companions. Their enormous frame places tremendous stress on joints, and hip dysplasia is prevalent. The breed is highly prone to osteosarcoma (bone cancer) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Excess weight dramatically increases cancer progression, heart failure, and the already-significant bloat risk in this deep-chested breed.

Exercise: Wolfhounds need 40–60 minutes of moderate daily exercise — long walks and occasional off-leash runs in secure areas. Puppies must not be over-exercised, as their rapid growth makes joints vulnerable. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 90 minutes after meals to reduce bloat risk. They are sprinters, not endurance athletes.

Feeding tips: Feed a large-breed formula in two to three measured meals daily. A wolfhound eats significantly more than most breeds — expect 6–10 cups of dry food per day for an adult. Use slow-feed bowls to prevent gulping. Never free-feed. Supplements like glucosamine support joint health in this giant breed.

Keeping your Irish Wolfhound at a healthy 105–180 lbs (48–82 kg) is critical for their heart, joints, and cancer prognosis.
