How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Landseer Health & Weight Management

The Landseer is a giant working breed closely related to the Newfoundland, distinguished by a black-and-white coat pattern. Originally bred as a fishing assistant in coastal Canada, they are powerful swimmers with webbed feet. Their massive size puts them at risk for hip and elbow dysplasia, subaortic stenosis (a serious heart defect), and cystinuria (bladder stones). Excess weight intensifies heart strain, accelerates joint degeneration, and increases the risk of cruciate ligament tears — already common in this breed.

Exercise: Landseers need 45–60 minutes of daily moderate exercise — long walks and swimming sessions. They are natural water athletes who love lakes, pools, and ocean waves. Avoid strenuous exercise in hot weather; their thick coat and large body cause overheating. Puppies need gentle, controlled exercise to protect developing joints until at least 18 months.

Feeding tips: Feed a large-breed formula in two to three measured meals daily. A Landseer eats 6–8 cups of dry food per day. Use elevated bowls cautiously — recent research questions their bloat-prevention benefit. Avoid exercising for 90 minutes around meals. Monitor water intake, as they are prone to bladder stones.

Keeping your Landseer at a healthy 100–155 lbs (45–70 kg) reduces heart strain and protects their joints. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Landseers to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
