How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Lhasa Apso Health & Weight Management

Lhasa Apsos are confident, smart little dogs with a long, luxurious coat and a comical personality. Originally bred as indoor sentinels in Tibetan monasteries, they are alert and loyal but can be wary of strangers. Their long backs make them susceptible to intervertebral disc disease — maintaining a lean weight is critical to reduce spinal stress. Patellar luxation and dental disease are also prevalent; excess weight worsens both.

Exercise: 25–35 minutes of daily moderate activity — short walks and indoor play. Lhasa Apsos are surprisingly agile for their small size. Avoid activities that strain the back, such as jumping on/off furniture. Indoor fetch and gentle training sessions work well.

Feeding tips: Lhasa Apsos don’t need much food — measure portions with a kitchen scale. A "small handful" of kibble can easily be 30% too much. Feed twice daily with a small-breed formula. Limit treats to pea-sized portions. Resist the comical begging; they are expert manipulators.

Keeping your Lhasa Apso at a healthy 11–18 lbs (5–8 kg) protects their spine and joints. Use PawScale’s calorie calculator for Lhasa Apso to determine precise daily needs, check body condition with our BCS assessment, and plan meals with the crate size calculator.
