How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Norfolk Terrier Health & Weight Management

The Norfolk Terrier is one of the smallest working terriers, originally bred in England to hunt vermin in farms and stables. They are sturdy, compact, and surprisingly fearless for their size. Their small frame is prone to patellar luxation and hip dysplasia — disproportionate to their size. Excess weight accelerates joint problems and strains their back, increasing the risk of intervertebral disc disease. They also face elevated risk for mitral valve disease as they age, and extra body mass forces the heart to work harder against this condition.

Exercise: Norfolk Terriers need 30–45 minutes of daily exercise — brisk walks, play sessions, and supervised off-leash exploration. They have boundless energy relative to their size and excel at earthdog trials and agility. They are curious diggers and will tunnel under fences. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys and training games is essential.

Feeding tips: Feed measured meals twice daily using a small-breed formula. A Norfolk needs only about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of dry food per day. Limit treats — even small training treats add up quickly on a 12-pound dog. Use portion-controlled feeding to prevent obesity. Dental chews help combat the breed's tendency toward dental disease.

Keeping your Norfolk Terrier at a healthy 11–13 lbs (5–6 kg) protects their joints and heart. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Norfolk Terriers to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
