How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Papillon Health & Weight Management

The Papillon is a toy spaniel named for their distinctive butterfly-shaped ears. One of the oldest toy breeds in Europe, they were painted by masters including Titian and Renoir. Despite their delicate appearance, Papillons are surprisingly athletic — they excel at agility and obedience at the highest levels. Their small frame is prone to patellar luxation and dental disease. They are also at risk for progressive retinal atrophy and collapsed trachea. Excess weight worsens breathing through a compromised trachea and accelerates joint degeneration.

Exercise: Papillons need 30–40 minutes of daily exercise — walks, active play, and structured games. They are the most athletic of the toy breeds and thrive in agility and rally obedience. They have impressive endurance for their size but should not be over-exercised in extreme heat. Mental stimulation through training and puzzle toys is just as important as physical exercise.

Feeding tips: Feed measured meals twice daily using a small-breed formula. A Papillon needs only 1/4 to 1/2 cup of dry food per day. Tiny treats add up fast on a 5-pound dog — use broken pieces of kibble for training rewards. Dental-formula kibble helps combat periodontal disease. Avoid foods with excessive fillers.

Keeping your Papillon at a healthy 4–10 lbs (2–4.5 kg) protects their trachea, joints, and teeth. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Papillons to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
