How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen Health & Weight Management

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen (PBGV) is a French scent hound with a rough, tousled coat and an exuberant personality. Originally bred to hunt small game through the rough brush of the Vendée region, they are sturdy, medium-sized dogs with a powerful nose. Their long back and short legs make them prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) — excess weight dramatically increases disc herniation risk. The breed also faces allergies, ear infections, and eye conditions including primary lens luxation.

Exercise: PBGVs need 45–60 minutes of daily exercise — long walks, sniffari outings, and supervised off-leash time in secure areas. Their nose is always to the ground and they will follow a scent trail regardless of recall commands. They are vocal dogs who howl and bay frequently. Secure fencing is essential — they are escape artists.

Feeding tips: Feed measured meals twice daily using a quality adult formula. PBGVs need about 1.5 to 2.5 cups per day. Their allergies may benefit from a limited-ingredient diet if food sensitivities are identified. Clean ears weekly to prevent infections. Avoid overfeeding — their compact build makes weight gain insidious under a rough coat.

Keeping your Petit Basset Griffon at a healthy 33–44 lbs (15–20 kg) protects their spine and reduces allergy-related inflammation. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for PBGVs to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
