Pointer Weight & Calorie Guide

The Pointer is a classic English gun dog bred to locate game birds and freeze in a characteristic pointing stance. They are lean, athletic, and built for endurance in the field. Their high-energy lifestyle means they rarely face obesity — until they retire from hunting. Pointers are prone to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and certain cardiac conditions. Once an active Pointer becomes a sedentary house pet, excess weight accumulates rapidly and devastates joints that were designed for a lifetime of running.

Exercise: Pointers need 60–90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise — running, hiking, fieldwork, and off-leash exploration in safe areas. They are among the highest-energy breeds and need an outlet for their athleticism. Without adequate exercise, they become anxious, destructive, and prone to weight gain. They excel at canicross, biking companions, and advanced retrieving games.

Feeding tips: Feed measured meals twice daily, adjusting portions to activity level. An active Pointer in hunting season needs significantly more calories than a retired house pet. Feed a performance formula during high-activity periods and switch to a maintenance formula when activity drops. Always provide fresh water during and after exercise.
