How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Pomeranian Health & Weight Management

Pomeranians are lively, fox-like toy dogs with a thick double coat and an outsized personality. Their small size makes them vulnerable to obesity-related complications — even slight weight gain strains the trachea (prone to collapse in Poms) and accelerates patellar luxation. Hip dysplasia, while less common in toys, can also be aggravated by excess pounds.

Exercise: 20–30 minutes of daily activity — brisk walks and interactive play. Poms are surprisingly energetic for their size. Avoid jumping from heights due to their fragile leg structure. Indoor fetch and puzzle toys work well on rainy days.

Feeding tips: Poms are notorious beggars. Use a kitchen scale to measure portions — a "small handful" of kibble can easily be 30% too much. Feed twice daily with a small-breed formula. Replace commercial treats with tiny pieces of carrot or blueberry.

Keeping your Pomeranian at an ideal 3–7 lbs (1.5–3 kg) is essential for joint and tracheal health. Use PawScale’s calorie calculator for Pomeranians to determine precise daily needs, assess body condition with our BCS tool, and follow the crate size calculator for portion guidance.
