How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Portuguese Water Dog Health & Weight Management

The Portuguese Water Dog is an athletic, medium-sized working breed originally used by fishermen along Portugal's coast to retrieve nets, carry messages between boats, and herd fish. They are strong swimmers with a waterproof, hypoallergenic coat. They are prone to hip dysplasia, juvenile dilated cardiomyopathy (JDCM), and storage disease (a fatal neurological condition). Excess weight worsens heart strain — particularly dangerous given the breed's cardiac predispositions — and accelerates joint degeneration.

Exercise: Portuguese Water Dogs need 45–60 minutes of vigorous daily exercise — swimming, retrieving, long walks, and agility. They are true water dogs who thrive with lake or pool access. They are highly intelligent and need mental challenges alongside physical exercise. They excel at dock diving, water rescue training, and competitive obedience.

Feeding tips: Feed measured meals twice daily using a quality adult formula. Portuguese Water Dogs need about 2 to 3 cups per day. Their curly coat benefits from omega fatty acid supplementation. Monitor for food allergies — skin issues are relatively common. Limit treats and avoid feeding before swimming sessions.

Keeping your Portuguese Water Dog at a healthy 35–60 lbs (16–27 kg) protects their heart and joints. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Portuguese Water Dogs to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
