How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Puli Health & Weight Management

The Puli is a Hungarian herding breed famous for their distinctive corded coat that forms natural dreadlocks. Bred for centuries to guard and herd livestock on the Hungarian plains, they are agile, energetic, and remarkably intelligent. Their compact, athletic frame is prone to hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy. Excess weight stresses joints and makes grooming their complex coat even more challenging — obesity is linked to increased skin fold moisture and infection under the cords. Their high energy means they rarely become overweight when young, but aging Pulis slow down significantly.

Exercise: Pulis need 45–60 minutes of daily vigorous exercise — running, herding activities, agility, and interactive play. They are among the most agile herding breeds and excel at competitive agility and flyball. They need a job to do — a bored Puli is a destructive Puli. Mental stimulation through training, herding trials, and puzzle games is as essential as physical exercise.

Feeding tips: Feed measured meals twice daily using a quality adult formula. A Puli needs about 1.5 to 2.5 cups per day. Their coat health benefits from omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Avoid free-feeding. Monitor calorie intake as they age and activity decreases. Use puzzle feeders to engage their intelligent minds during meals.

Keeping your Puli at a healthy 22–35 lbs (10–16 kg) protects their joints and supports coat health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Pulis to set exact daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
