How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Samoyed Health & Weight Management

Samoyeds are fluffy, energetic working dogs originally bred for herding reindeer in Siberia. While their thick coat can mask weight gain, obesity is a real concern that stresses joints prone to hip dysplasia. The breed is also at risk for Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy (a kidney disease) — maintaining healthy weight reduces kidney workload. Diabetes is another condition worsened by excess body fat.

Exercise: 40–60 minutes of daily exercise — walks, play sessions, or pulling activities. Samoyeds thrive in cold weather and can exercise longer when temperatures are low. In warm climates, exercise only during early morning or evening. They enjoy agility, carting, and hiking.

Feeding tips: Measure portions carefully — the Samoyed's thick double coat makes it easy to miss gradual weight gain. Feel for ribs regularly (you should be able to feel them without pressing hard). Feed 2–3 cups of quality kibble daily in 2 meals. Choose formulas with omega fatty acids to support their luxurious coat.

Keeping your Samoyed at an ideal 35–64 lbs (16–29 kg) supports joint and kidney health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Samoyeds to find daily energy needs, check body condition with our BCS tool, and follow the feeding guide for tailored meal recommendations.
