Schipperke Weight & Calorie Guide

Schipperkes are small, sturdy Belgian barge dogs originally bred to hunt rats on canal boats and guard cargo. Despite their compact 11–18 lb frame, they are fearless and endlessly energetic. The breed carries a high prevalence of mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB), a lysosomal storage disease, and is prone to hypothyroidism and Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. Excess weight worsens these orthopedic and metabolic conditions — even a pound or two extra on such a small body places significant stress on tiny hip joints and the spine.

Exercise: Schipperkes need 30–45 minutes of daily activity. They thrive on variety — agility, obedience, and interactive games that challenge both body and mind.
