How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Scottish Terrier Health & Weight Management

Scottish Terriers are dignified, independent small dogs with a distinctive silhouette and a wiry coat. Despite their short legs, they are tenacious and energetic. Scotties are prone to Scottie Cramp (a stress-related neuromuscular condition) and bladder cancer — maintaining optimal weight reduces overall physiological stress. Their long backs also make them susceptible to intervertebral disc disease if overweight.

Exercise: 30–40 minutes of daily activity — walks and vigorous play. Scotties enjoy digging and chasing games. They have strong prey drive, so use secure fencing. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys and training sessions helps channel their independent nature.

Feeding tips: Scotties can be stubborn eaters but also food-motivated when they choose to be. Measure food precisely. Feed twice daily with a small-breed formula. Avoid free-feeding. Use low-calorie training treats to prevent weight gain during frequent training sessions.

Keeping your Scottish Terrier at an ideal 18–22 lbs (8–10 kg) protects their spine and reduces disease risk. Use PawScale’s calorie calculator for Scotties to find precise daily needs, check body condition with our BCS tool, and plan meals with the crate size calculator.
