How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Shetland Sheepdog Health & Weight Management

Shetland Sheepdogs are quick, agile herding dogs in a compact package. They are generally healthy but prone to hypothyroidism, which can cause unexpected weight gain even with normal food intake. If your Sheltie gains weight despite consistent portions, ask your vet for a thyroid panel. Excess weight worsens hip dysplasia and patellar luxation risks.

Exercise: Shelties need 30–60 minutes of active exercise daily — running, agility, flyball, or herding trials. They excel at canine sports and need both physical and mental challenges. A bored, under-exercised Sheltie may develop destructive behaviors.

Feeding tips: Feed measured portions of quality kibble twice daily. Shelties are typically good at self-regulating but can become less active with age — adjust calories accordingly. Monitor weight especially after age 5 when hypothyroidism risk increases.

Keeping your Sheltie at an ideal 13–26 lbs (6–12 kg) supports long-term agility and health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Shelties to find daily energy needs, check body condition with our BCS tool, and create a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
