How the puppy weight predictor works
This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.
Factors that affect adult weight
Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Shih Tzu Health & Weight Management
Shih Tzu are cheerful, outgoing toy dogs with a luxurious flowing coat and a proud, aristocratic carriage. Originally bred as companions for Chinese royalty, they are affectionate lap dogs with surprising spunk. Their brachycephalic (flat-faced) anatomy makes breathing inherently difficult, and any extra weight dramatically worsens brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) — even modest overweight can push a Shih Tzu into dangerous respiratory distress, especially in warm weather. Patellar luxation and progressive retinal atrophy are also breed concerns; excess body fat compounds joint stress and reduces overall mobility.
Exercise: 20–30 minutes of gentle daily exercise — short walks and indoor play sessions. Avoid hot or humid weather entirely; Shih Tzu overheat rapidly due to their flat faces. Keep walks leisurely and let your Shih Tzu set the pace. Indoor fetch and gentle training games provide good mental stimulation without overexertion.
Feeding tips: Shih Tzu are eager eaters with a compact frame — even an extra teaspoon of kibble per meal adds up to significant caloric surplus. Measure every portion with a kitchen scale. Split meals into two small daily feedings. Use low-calorie treats like tiny carrot pieces, and brush teeth regularly since dental disease is rampant in the breed.
Keeping your Shih Tzu at a lean 9–16 lbs (4–7 kg) is critical for breathing ease, joint comfort, and eye health. Use PawScale's calorie calculator for Shih Tzu to determine exact daily intake, check body condition with our BCS assessment tool, and build a balanced meal plan with the feeding guide.
