How the puppy weight predictor works
This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.
Factors that affect adult weight
Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Vizsla Health & Weight Management
Vizsla are sleek, golden-rusted pointers known for their velvety coat and inseparable bond with their owner ("Velcro dogs"). They are naturally lean, athletic dogs, but inactive or overfed Vizslas can gain weight, worsening hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Their sensitive nature means they respond poorly to sudden diet changes — transition foods gradually.
Exercise: 60–90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise — running, hiking, swimming, and field work. A Vizsla without adequate exercise becomes destructive and anxious. They excel at pointing, retrieving, and agility. Mental stimulation through scent work and training is essential.
Feeding tips: Active Vizslas need high-quality protein (22–25%). Measure meals carefully; on rest days, reduce portions to match lower energy expenditure. Avoid feeding immediately before or after intense exercise to reduce bloat risk. Split meals into two daily portions.
Keeping your Vizsla at a lean 44–66 lbs (20–30 kg) supports joint health and field performance. Use PawScale’s calorie calculator for Vizslas to find precise daily needs, check body condition with our BCS tool, and follow the crate size calculator.
