How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

Welsh Corgi (Cardigan) Health & Weight Management

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are the older and rarer of the two Corgi breeds, originally developed in Wales as versatile farm dogs for herding cattle, guarding property, and hunting vermin. Their long-backed, short-legged "fox on stilts" build is charming but creates serious structural vulnerability. Weighing 22–38 lbs, they are extremely prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), hip dysplasia, and degenerative myelopathy. Excess weight is one of the most dangerous things for a Corgi — even a few extra pounds dramatically increases spinal compression and the likelihood of a debilitating disc herniation.

Exercise: Cardigan Corgis need 30–45 minutes of daily exercise. They enjoy brisk walks, herding activities, and nose work. Avoid activities that involve jumping on or off furniture, steep stairs, or standing on hind legs — these movements put dangerous stress on their elongated spine. Swimming is an excellent low-impact option. Mental stimulation through training games and food puzzles suits their herding-dog intelligence.

Feeding tips: Feed two measured meals daily using a quality formula for small breeds. Cardigans are notorious food beggars with an insatiable appetite — strict portion control is non-negotiable. Use a kitchen scale to measure every meal. Limit treats to 10% of daily calories and substitute with low-calorie options like green beans. Never free-feed a Corgi.

Keeping your Cardigan Welsh Corgi at a healthy 22–38 lbs (10–17 kg) is the single most important thing you can do to protect their spine.
