How the puppy weight predictor works

This predictor uses growth milestone data from Salt et al. (2017), published in Veterinary Record, which tracked the weight development of dogs across five size categories from birth to adulthood. By comparing your puppy's current weight against the expected growth percentage for their age and size category, we estimate their adult weight range.

Factors that affect adult weight

Genetics play the largest role, but nutrition, neutering status, and overall health also influence growth rate. Puppies fed excessive calories during rapid growth phases may exceed their genetic weight potential, while underfed puppies may not reach it. Large and giant breeds grow more slowly than toy and small breeds, reaching full size at 18–24 months rather than 10–12 months.

West Highland White Terrier Health & Weight Management

West Highland White Terriers are sturdy, confident small terriers with a distinctive white coat. Originally bred for hunting vermin, they have surprising endurance and a strong prey drive. Westies are prone to allergic skin disease (atopic dermatitis) — excess weight worsens inflammation and makes skin fold irritation more likely. Patellar luxation and craniomandibular osteopathy are also breed concerns.

Exercise: 30–40 minutes of daily exercise — brisk walks, digging games, and secure off-leash running. Westies love to chase, so always keep them on-leash in unfenced areas. They enjoy earthdog trials and small-ground agility.

Feeding tips: Westies are enthusiastic eaters and will work hard for food rewards. Measure portions with a kitchen scale. Choose a formula appropriate for active small breeds. Limit treats to 10% of daily intake. If your Westie has skin allergies, consider a limited-ingredient diet.

Keeping your Westie at a healthy 13–20 lbs (6–9 kg) supports skin and joint health. Use PawScale’s calorie calculator for Westies to set daily limits, check body condition with our BCS assessment, and follow the crate size calculator.
