Toxic Compound: Theobromine (a methylxanthine alkaloid)
Symptoms:
Chocolate is one of the most common canine poisonings worldwide. Theobromine is metabolized far more slowly in dogs than in humans, allowing it to accumulate to toxic levels.

Toxic Compound: Tartaric acid
Symptoms:
Grapes and raisins are uniquely dangerous because even a single grape can cause acute kidney failure in susceptible dogs. The mechanism was only recently identified as tartaric acid. There is no antidote, and treatment is supportive only.

Toxic Compound: Xylitol (birch sugar)
Symptoms:
Xylitol is a sugar alcohol found in sugar-free gum, candy, peanut butter, baked goods, and some toothpastes. In dogs, xylitol triggers a massive and rapid release of insulin, causing blood sugar to plummet to dangerous levels. Higher doses can lead to liver failure within 24-72 hours.

Toxic Compound: N-propyl disulfide
Symptoms:
Onions in all forms — raw, cooked, powdered, dehydrated — contain N-propyl disulfide, which causes oxidative damage to red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia. Japanese breeds (Akita, Shiba Inu) are particularly susceptible due to genetic differences in their red blood cell metabolism.

Toxic Compound: Ethanol
Symptoms:
Dogs are far more sensitive to alcohol than humans. Even small amounts of beer, wine, liquor, or foods containing alcohol (including some desserts and fermented fruit) can cause dangerous CNS depression, hypothermia, and respiratory failure.
Toxic Compound: Methylxanthines (caffeine, theobromine, theophylline)
Symptoms:
Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, certain medications, and chocolate. Like theobromine, caffeine is a methylxanthine that overstimulates the cardiovascular and central nervous systems.

Symptoms:
Macadamia nuts are the only widely recognized toxic nut for dogs. The exact toxic mechanism remains unidentified, but the effects are well-documented. Macadamia nuts cause a distinctive syndrome of hind leg weakness or paralysis.

Symptoms:
Raw bread dough poses two simultaneous dangers in a dog's warm stomach. First, the yeast continues to ferment and produce CO2, causing the dough to expand and potentially leading to gastric dilation-volvulus (bloat), a life-threatening emergency. Second, the fermentation process produces ethanol, which is absorbed into the bloodstream causing alcohol poisoning.
Toxic Compound: N-propyl disulfide (same as onion)
Symptoms:
Garlic belongs to the Allium family alongside onion, chives, and leek. While garlic is approximately five times less toxic than onion on a per-weight basis, it still causes oxidative damage to red blood cells. Garlic powder and concentrated forms are especially dangerous because they deliver a higher dose in a smaller volume.

Chives are a less commonly encountered Allium toxin, but they carry the same red blood cell-damaging compounds as onion and garlic. Chives are often found in garden plants and as a garnish on prepared foods.

Symptoms:
Nutmeg contains myristicin, a compound that causes hallucinations, increased heart rate, disorientation, and in severe cases, seizures. Nutmeg is commonly found in baked goods, eggnog, and spice blends during holiday seasons.
While the 12 foods above represent the most dangerous category, several other foods carry significant risk:

Not all dangerous foods cause immediate, dramatic symptoms. Some cause progressive damage that may not be recognized until significant harm has occurred.
Chronic consumption of high-salt foods (chips, pretzels, processed meats, table scraps) can lead to excessive thirst, urination, and eventually sodium ion poisoning. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures, and even death. The recommended daily sodium intake for a dog is far lower than most human snacks provide.
Repeated exposure to fatty foods (bacon, butter, fried foods, fatty meat trimmings) can trigger pancreatitis — an inflammatory condition of the pancreas. This is extremely painful and potentially fatal. Breeds like Miniature Schnauzers are genetically predisposed. Symptoms include severe vomiting, diarrhea, a "prayer position" (front down, rear up) indicating abdominal pain, and lethargy.
Cooked bones (chicken, ribs, T-bones) splinter into sharp fragments that can perforate the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. This is distinctly different from raw bones, which are less brittle. Bone fragments cause internal bleeding, peritonitis, and require emergency surgery.
Not all dogs respond equally to toxic foods. Certain breeds carry genetic predispositions that increase their vulnerability:
• Japanese breeds (Akita, Shiba Inu, Japanese Chin): These breeds are significantly more susceptible to Allium toxicity (onion, garlic, chives, leek) due to higher baseline levels of oxidative stress on their red blood cells. A dose that causes only mild symptoms in a Labrador may cause severe hemolytic anemia in an Akita.
• Small breeds (Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Toy Poodle): Smaller body mass means a smaller absolute amount of any toxin reaches the toxic threshold. A single grape, a small piece of xylitol-containing gum, or a bite of chocolate can represent a much higher dose per kg in a 5-pound dog versus a 70-pound dog.
• Brachycephalic breeds (Bulldog, Pug): These breeds are already prone to gastrointestinal issues and may experience more severe reactions to rich, fatty foods.
