Chihuahuas face a unique nutritional challenge: hypoglycemia risk. Their tiny bodies (sometimes under 4 lbs) have minimal glucose reserves, meaning skipping even one meal can cause dangerous blood sugar drops. This is especially critical for puppies under 6 months, who need 3-4 small meals daily rather than the standard 2.
A common mistake Chihuahua owners make is free-feeding dry kibble. While this seems convenient, it encourages picky eating and makes it impossible to track actual intake. Many Chihuahuas also develop dental disease early (often by age 3), making hard kibble painful to chew. If your Chihuahua suddenly eats less, check their teeth before assuming they're being finicky.
Calorie needs vary dramatically by activity level. A couch-dwelling Chihuahua may need only 200 kcal/day, while one that hikes or does agility might need 300+. The key indicator is body condition — you should easily feel ribs without seeing them. If your Chihuahua's calorie needs seem unusually high or low for their size, ask your vet to rule out thyroid issues, which are surprisingly common in the breed.
