Calorie Calculator

4 steps · 60 seconds · RER formula vets use

💡 Quick answer

Most adult dogs need 25-30 calories per pound of ideal body weight daily. But the exact amount depends on age, activity, and neuter status. This calculator uses the RER formula — the same method vets use — to give you a precise number.

How This Calculator Works

Our calculator uses the same two-step formula veterinarians use. First, it estimates your dog's Resting Energy Requirement (RER) — the calories needed for basic body functions at rest:

RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75

It then multiplies RER by a life-stage and lifestyle factor to get the Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER): puppies need up to 3× RER while growing, neutered adults typically need 1.6× RER, and dogs on a weight-loss plan need about 1.0× RER. Activity level, breed, and individual metabolism can shift real-world needs by ±20%, so use the result as a starting point and adjust based on your dog's body condition.

Typical Daily Calorie Needs by Weight

Quick reference for a healthy, neutered adult dog at a normal activity level. For puppies, seniors, or weight-loss plans, use the calculator above for an individualized estimate.

Dog WeightCalories/Day (Neutered Adult)
5 lb (2.3 kg)~210 kcal
10 lb (4.5 kg)~350 kcal
20 lb (9 kg)~585 kcal
40 lb (18 kg)~985 kcal
60 lb (27 kg)~1,335 kcal
80 lb (36 kg)~1,650 kcal

*Estimates based on WSAVA guidelines (MER ≈ 1.6 × RER). Individual needs vary — monitor body condition and adjust with your vet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories should my dog eat per day?▾

It depends on weight, age, neuter status, and activity. As a rough guide, a neutered adult dog needs about 30-35 kcal per pound of body weight per day. A 20 lb dog eats roughly 600 kcal/day, while a 60 lb dog needs around 1,300 kcal/day. Use the calculator above for an estimate tailored to your dog.

How many calories does a puppy need?▾

Puppies need far more calories per pound than adults — typically 2× to 3× their RER while growing. A 10 lb puppy may need 700+ kcal/day, split across 3-4 meals. Large-breed puppies need carefully controlled calories to protect joint development, so follow your food's feeding chart and your vet's advice.

Do spayed or neutered dogs need fewer calories?▾

Yes. After spaying or neutering, metabolism typically drops 20-30%. Most neutered adults maintain weight on about 1.6× RER, and many need 10-20% less than that if activity is low. If your dog was recently fixed, reduce portions and watch body condition for the first 2-3 months.

How many calories should a Beagle eat?▾

An adult Beagle (20-25 lb) typically needs 550-750 kcal/day. Beagles are famously food-motivated and prone to obesity — measure meals with a scale or cup, limit treats to under 10% of daily calories, and check their Body Condition Score monthly.

Are treats included in my dog's daily calories?▾

Yes — treats count. Keep treats below 10% of total daily calories. For a 40 lb dog eating ~1,000 kcal/day, that's 100 kcal of treats at most. A single large biscuit can be 50-100 kcal, so small training treats (3-5 kcal) are a better choice.
